1 Peter 5:12-14<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intro.  The Situation Reviewed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Nero began extreme\npersecution of Christians in 64 A.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Peter probably wrote\nthis book with the help of Silas from Rome sometime in 63-64 A.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) The Epistle was\nwritten to encourage, scattered believer in the churches of Asia Minor (Turkey)\nto stand firm in their faith, supplied by God\u2019s grace, prepared for the fiery\ntrials that were headed their way.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prop.  How can we to stand firm in God\u2019s amazing\ngrace during times of trial, trouble and persecution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Pet 5:12-14, 12 Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so\nI regard {him} , I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that\nthis is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13     She who is in Babylon, chosen together with\nyou, sends you greetings, and {so does} my son, mark.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14     Greet one another with a kiss of love.\nPeace be to you all who are in Christ.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Standing Firm in the\nRelationships of Grace \u2013 vs. 12a, 13b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  A. Relationships with faithful Servants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Silas had proved himself faithful in his\nministry with Paul (in prison with Paul) \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     Acts 15-16<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Mark had proved himself faithful in his\nministry with Peter (the book of Mark)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  B. Restoration with faithful Servants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – The restoration of relationship between\nPeter and Paul (book of Galatians)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – The restoration of relationship between\nPaul and Mark \u2013 2 Tim 4:9-17<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9       Make every effort to come to me soon; 10        for Demas, having loved this present\nworld, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens {has gone} to\nGalatia, Titus to Dalmatia. 11    Only\nLuke is with me. Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me\nfor service. 12     But Tychicus I have\nsent to Ephesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

13     When you come bring the cloak which I left\nat Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments. 14      Alexander the coppersmith did me much\nharm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15    Be on guard against him yourself, for he vigorously\nopposed our teaching. 16     At my first defense no one supported me,\nbut all deserted me; may it not be counted against them. 17 But the Lord stood with me, and strengthened\nme, in order that through me the proclamation might be fully accomplished, and\nthat all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the lion’s mouth.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  C. Recognition of Chosen Brethren \u2013 vs. 13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Names that protect during times of\npersecution, \u201cBabylon\u201d – (the Stents)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Bonds together in the Lord and in Love for\neach other – 1 Pet 4:8-10, 8   Above all,\nkeep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of\nsins. 9  Be hospitable to one another\nwithout complaint. 10   As each one has received a {special} gift,\nemploy it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of\nGod.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Standing Firm in the\nRighteousness of Grace \u2013 vs. 12b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  A. Standing Firm in Our Faith \u20131 Pet 5:9-10, 9         But resist him, firm in {your} faith,\nknowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your\nbrethren who are in the world. 10      And after you have suffered for a little\nwhile, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ,\nwill Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen {and} establish you.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Standing Firm in Our Salvation \u2013 the\nblessed Hope, Sanctification, Living Stones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

     1 Peter 1:3-2:10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Standing Firm in Our Submission \u2013 First to\nthe Lord and then to Authorities and <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      institutions God has placed over us! \u2013\n2:11-3:7<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Standing Firm in Our Suffering together \u2013\n3:8-5:10 –  Suffering for doing right, <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Suffering in unity together, Suffering by\nhumbly casting our cares on Him and <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      resisting Satan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  B. Standing Firm in the Truth Together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXHORTING    1. parakaleo ^3870^, the most frequent word\nwith this meaning, lit. denotes “to call to one’s side,” hence,\n“to call to one’s aid.” It is used for every kind of calling to a\nperson which is meant to produce a particular effect (from Vine’s)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Encouraging Unity in the Body together \u2013 1\nPet 2:9-10, 9      But you are a chosen\nrace, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for {God’s} own possession,\nthat you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness\ninto His marvelous light; 10      for you\nonce were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received\nmercy, but now you have received mercy.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Exhorting each other to love and good\ndeeds – Heb 10:23-25, 23   Let us hold\nfast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

24     and let us consider how to stimulate one\nanother to love and good deeds,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

25     not forsaking our own assembling together,\nas is the habit of some, but encouraging {one another}  and all the more, as you see the day drawing\nnear.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  C. Standing Firm as Testimonies Together <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TESTIFY     2. epimartureo ^1957^, “to bear witness\nto” (a strengthened form of No. 1), is rendered “testifying” in\n<1 Pet. 5:12>. (from Vine’s) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Suffering Righteously by God\u2019s Grace \u20131\nPet 2:19-20, 19       For this {finds}\nfavor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a man bears up under sorrows\nwhen suffering unjustly. 20   For what\ncredit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with\npatience? But if when you do what is right and suffer {for it} you patiently\nendure it, this {finds} favor with God.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Serving Righteously by the Manifold Grace\nof God! – 1 Pet 4:10-11, 10    As each one\nhas received a {special} gift, employ it in serving one another, as good\nstewards of the manifold grace of God. 11    Whoever\nspeaks, {let him speak,} as it were, the utterances of God; whoever serves,\n{let him do so} as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things\nGod may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion\nforever and ever. Amen.(NAS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Standing Firm in the\nRealities of Grace \u2013 vs. 14<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  A. The Reality of Salvation through Faith and\nGrace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Without Faith, we cannot have the grace of\nGod in our lives, without the grace of <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      God provided through the Lord Jesus\nChrist,  we cannot have faith that can\nsave us <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      from our sin and provide that Blessed\nHope!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  B. The Reality of Submission in Grace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – We cannot realize God\u2019s grace in our lives\nif we fail to submit to His authority and <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      the authorities He places over us for our\nwell being!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  C. The Reality of Suffering in Grace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

   – Suffering for the cause of Christ as\nChrist did for us is a reality we all must face in <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      our lives here on this earth.  We will never be able to withstand the fiery\ntrials of <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      persecution and suffering if we do not learn\ndependence on the strength of God\u2019s <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      grace in our lives!  He will Hold Me Fast!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Verses 12-13, What relationships\nare highlighted?  How do these\nrelationships with Silas, Mark, and \u201cBabylon\u201d give us insight into the\nrelationships we are to have and share in our lives today?  Are there relationships we should cherish and\nhold on to? What are the relationships in your life that may need to be\nrestored or renewed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. According to 1 Peter 5:9-10, how\ncan we stand firm in our faith when we are attacked by Satan and the trials and\ntroubles of this world?  What does God do\nto help us stand firm according to verse 10? \nHow can we make sure that our suffering will bring God glory? 1 Pet.\n2:19-20  How can we encourage and exhort\neach other to stand firm?  Heb. 10:23-25;\n1 Pet. 2:9-10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. What are the realities that we must\nface in order to Stand firm in God\u2019s Grace? \nHave you put your faith and trust in God\u2019s grace provided by the Lord\nfor your salvation?  Have You submitted\nyour life to God first?  Have you\nsubmitted your life to the authority God has placed over your life?  Are you suffering righteously with God\u2019s\nGrace as your strength?  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.
