In Psalms 61 we find that David comes to the
Lord in search of a Rock, a place of safety, refuge, and peace. We need to call out to God to “lead me to the
Rock that is higher than I.”(vs. 2)

The Word pictures of this Psalm are awe
inspiring as we see the Lord’s love, power and protection in life. Picture the strong tower of protection in our
battles. Any General in a battle knows
that the army that controls the high ground will win the battle. So true of our lives, when we run to our high
tower of strength and truth, we have the ability to have victory in our
struggles. We also need a place of safe
refuge. We find this in the picture of
“the shelter of His wings.” My Mother
used to tell a story of a fire in the barn or chicken coupe where the baby
chicks were sheltered under the mother hens wings. After the fire was put out the baby chicks
were found alive under the wings of the mother hen. Even though the mother hen was dead, the
babies were saved. What a picture of
what God does for us in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The difference is that Christ rose again and we are alive together with
Him.

The most important picture is that of living
in the presence of the Lord forever.
David realized that the only complete place of victory and safety was in
the presence of the Lord. So this is his
final prayer: Psalms 61:7-8, 7 May he
be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to
protect him. 8 Then will I ever sing
praise to your name and fulfill my vows day after day.(NIV) We have the promise of God that one day we
will live eternally in the presence of the Lord, ruling and reigning in worship
and glory with our God and King Jesus Christ.
This is the final victory we have in the Lord, to be able to worship and
praise Him forever.

Father, many times in this life I find
myself weary and battle scarred from the battles of this life. I find that I need You as my tower of
protection and strength. Help me to run
to the shelter of Your wings and depend on You as my Rock, Refuge, Safety, and
Peace. Thank You for the promise that
one day I will live eternally in Your presence celebrating in worship and
praise, giving glory to the King of Kings and Lord of Lord!
