Hobart Herd Devotional – Psalms 30 – 5-30-20

The heading of this Psalm is that this song was used at the dedication of the temple.  While we know that David was not allowed to build the temple of God, he was the one who brought the tabernacle into the city and chose the place that Solomon would build God’s temple.  David’s heart was that God would have a house to reside with His people and that the people of the world could come to worship and honor the God of Israel.

As we read these verses we see David extol his God even though God had punished him for his sins, so much so that David was in need of God’s healing both spiritually and physically.  Even though David had experienced the discipline of God’s love and holiness, he never lost sight that God had healed, restored and brought him out of the pit.  The key verses are: Psalms 30:4-5,   Sing praises to the Lord, O you his

saints, and give thanks to his holy name.       For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.(ESV)  Praise the Lord that for His children, His anger is short and His favor, grace mercy and love are for a lifetime!  I thank God continuously that I can go to Him and ask forgiveness and He forgives and cleanses me from all unrighteousness.(1 John 1:9)

This may seem like a strange way to celebrate the temple of the Lord, but what better place than His house to celebrate His faithful love in disciplining His children when they sin, and bringing the light of His presence and love back into our hearts as we are returned to right relationship with Him again.  May I, like the prodigal son eating the pig slop, be reminded of God’s longing for my repentance, return, and restoration.  His anger is short, and His grace, mercy and love is for a lifetime!

Father, when I enter into worship may I always remember the grace You have given me in Your Son.  I am so thankful that Your anger is just for a moment and I truly don’t fall under Your wrath because of the covering of my sin by the blood of Your Son.  Not only is your favor for a lifetime, but Your love is for all eternity for those who trust in Your Son.  In Jesus Name, Amen!  Pastor Rob
