Hobart Herd Devotional – Psalms 54

This is a confident prayer of David that God would deliver him from the hand of Saul.  In 1 Samuel 23 we have the story of those who would try to get on Saul’s good side and deliver David into his hand.  Jonathon, Saul’s son, met with David and declared that God had chosen David as the next king and He would be second under David.  They covenanted together and encouraged each other to remain strong in their faith and trust in God.  The Ziphites tried to betray David who was hiding in their lands and made a pact with Saul to help him find and kill David.  But as the story goes, Saul was on one side of the mountain and David trying to escape on the other side when God sent a messenger to Saul saying that the Philistines were invading the land.  So Saul left the pursuit of David to battle the Philistines.  This is just one example of the many times that God provided an escape and way through for David and his followers.

Do I pray confidently trusting God to come through for me?  When it seems that my enemies are winning and I have no way of escape or relief, do I trust in God Who is my Help and Deliverer?  David cried out to God because of the people that turned against him, but He never lost hope in the fact that God can use any and every small detail to bring comfort, help and strength in every situation.  The key verses are verses 4 & 7; 4

“Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.  7  For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.”(KJV)  Do we really believe that God is our Helper?  Can we thank God for the “Jonathon’s” in our lives that bring us encouragement and friendship during our hardest times?  I thank God that He has always provided those that love, support, pray and encourage me in the midst of my hardest times.  I can say as David did, God has delivered me out of all trouble and I have seen His dealing with my enemies.  I trust in the Lord to deal with those who are against me and to deal with me if it is my sin that has brought my troubles on me.  I know the God is my strength and help, and I praise Him for the “Jonathon’s” that He has provided me.

Father, give me confidence in Your power to deliver me and deal with my enemies.  As I look at David, I thank you for the example of Jonathon, who was there to encourage and uplift David in his hardest hour.  May I never forget all the times that You have helped me and trust in You as I pray for Your help and deliverance.  In Jesus Name, Amen!  Pastor Rob
