Hobart Herd Devotional – Psalms 59

Have you ever felt attacked on every side with your only hope being the miraculous deliverance of the Lord.  David often felt this way and this Psalm gives us the pattern for overcoming victory.  The first is our prayer for deliverance.  Psalms  59:1   Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me.(NIV)  In verses 2-7 David tells God all the ways that his enemies are attacking him relentlessly.  He tells God of his innocence and integrity before the Lord as he recognizes the difference between punishment for sin and being caught in the evil actions of the enemy.  May we be able to call out to God from a place of integrity and innocence!

We need this heart of faith and trust that God can and will fight for us.  Nothing that this world can do can stop our Faithful and Powerful God!  Psalms 59:9-10, 9  O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, 10   my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.(NIV)  We must learn to understand that God laughs at the strength of the enemy.  We can watch for God our Strength and Fortress to come to our defense.  My loving God goes before me and will enable me to see Him make a fool of our enemies.  I often think of Satan killing Jesus on the cross and gloating in his victory only to find out that in the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of my Lord the ultimate sacrifice for sin and victory over death was completed!

My hope is that every day I will sing of His strength, love, protection and refuge in times of trouble.(vs. 16)  Truly He is our fortress and loving God!(vs. 17)  Find a hymnal and read and sing “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”.  Worship Him for Who He is and what He has done for You today!

Father, I get caught up in the power of my enemies, and fail to really celebrate, worship, and rejoice in my loving God; my Fortress and Strength in times of trouble.  I quickly see all the ways my enemies attack me and try to destroy me and miss the way that You show Yourself strong on my behalf.  Forgive me for my lack of trust and worship, and help me to take refuge and watch as You fight for me.  In Jesus Name, Amen!  Pastor Rob
