Hobart Herd Devotional – Proverbs 30, 3-30-20

Hobart Herd Devotional Proverbs 30

March 30, 2020

This is the day that the Lord has made.  I will rejoice and be glad in it!  Sometimes I need to be reminded of Who is really in charge of everything that goes on in this world.  Proverbs 30:4-6:  Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His fists?  Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?  Who has established all the ends of the earth?  What is His name, and what is His Son’s name?  Surely you know!”

This chapter starts out with statements of being ignorant and stupid, unwise as a man.  These words are simply an attitude of humility and a cry for wisdom.  With these thoughts and attitudes Agur then asks 5 questions in verse 4.  These questions asked in Job 38:4-11, and all of us, are rhetorical questions that we can answer.  The answer is God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Even those who claim ignorance of Who God is can answer these questions.  So why did Agur ask these questions?  It was to set us up!

You see, if you know that there is a God, Creator and Controller of all, and His Son, Jesus Christ that gives us the very air that we breath, then why don’t we trust Him in every difficult situation?  In verse 5, we are reminded that every Word and Promise that God has given us is faithful, true, and trustworthy.  We can take refuge in Him!  Verse 6 then reminds us not to add to His Words or we will be rebuked as a liar.  All of this tells me that God has given me His Words and Promises so that I can take refuge in Him.  If I don’t take refuge in Him it is because I have added, subtracted, ignored, changed, and not put my trust in Him.  When I do this, I reject His truth and become a liar.  1 John 1:7-10 reminds me that I am to walk in the light of God’s word, recognizing my sin, confessing and repenting of it and receiving His forgiveness for all my sin.  If I do this, I can then take refuge in my Faithful God and His Word revealed to me by His Son, Jesus Christ!  May I never doubt, add or change His Word and Promises given to provide strength and refuge.

Father, I acknowledge Who You are and What you have done for me in Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Thank you for Your Word that I can take trust and take refuge in You.  Forgive me of my doubt, adding or changing the truth of Your promises.  I lay my life in Your hands today, trusting that You are with me and in everything I face, You will make a way.  I take refuge in You and Your Word!  Amen
