Hobart Herd Devotional – Proverbs 22 – 4-22-20

I love the truthful wisdom of Proverbs as it usually gives an understanding of the risk of sinful rebellious behavior and the reward of walking in close personal relationship and obedience to God’s wise instructions.  It comes down to making good and right decisions according to the Word of God.  Verse 1 starts off, “Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.”(NLT)  I need to be reminded that my reputation before others and before God is more important then the riches of this world.  I am basically a very cheap man, and many times my choices are made entirely on money instead of what is best and lasting.  I need to be a testimony of how to live for eternity’s values.

I am also reminded of how living in “true humility and fear of the Lord leads to riches, honor, and long life.”(vs. 4)  Right now the Lord has given us an opportunity to touch the lives of our children and grand children.  Many of you are given the privilege of watching and teaching your kids and grandkids because of the pandemic that we are living in.  Never forget that when we teach them to choose the right path of honor, morality, and wisdom in the Lord, that it will remain with them and guide them as they mature.  The promise of God’s faithfulness to bring to mind His Words of wisdom and truth to our children is one of the greatest comforts in our lives as parents and grandparents.  Teach truth and hold on to His promise!(vs. 6)

Why does God take the time to teach us His truth when we tend to ignore, reject or rebel against it?  I have honestly wondered why the Lord shows me mercy and grace when I fail to listen and obey.  Verses 17-19 give us the answer:  17 Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction. 18 For it is good to keep these sayings deep within yourself, always ready on your lips. 19 I am teaching you today—yes, you—so you will trust in the Lord.(NLT)  I love the words, “I am teaching you today—yes, you”.  God has specifically chosen to invest His Words of wisdom, love, grace and truth into my life!  I should be humbled by this and hold onto and live by His Word.  Even when I fail to live by His wisdom and truth, I can see His faithfulness in keeping His promise to love me and guide me with His wisdom.  I just need to make the right choice to trust in Him more!  Sing right now, ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”.

Father, Your wisdom and truth is truly available for me today.  I can easily see the rewards of living in the truth of Your Word.  Help me today to apply me life to obeying Your Word.  Forgive me when I choose to ignore You and suffer the consequences of my selfish sinful behavior.  Thank you for Your enduring love and mercy in my life, allowing me to grow and learn to choose You and Your ways.  May I truly learn to trust in You more!  In Jesus name, Amen!  Pastor Rob
