Hobart Herd Devotional – Psalms 2 – 4-28-20

Yesterday we looked at Psalms 1 and saw a personal relationship with God dependent on our focus on the truths of His Word in our lives to keep us on the right track spiritually.  Today in Psalms 2 we find more of a focus on right relationship with God as nations and the affect of rebellion against God and His Messiah, Son on the world of nations.  I think that one thing I have learned through the last 6 weeks is how connected we are as a world of nations and how one virus has brought us all to our knees.  Sometimes we think that bad things will only happen to those backward or rebellious nations as God will deal with them and we forget that we have our own problem of rebellion and rejection of the King of Kings in our own nation.

This is a prophetic Psalm and deals with the problem of rebellion against God and His Authority over the world.  When you study the Old Testament you realize that the nations that surrounded Israel hated the God of Israel and His people.  They refused to submit to God and continually tried to wipe out His people and Kingdom.  When Israel submitted to following after God, no other nation around them could touch them without God’s judgment ad retribution falling on them.  In this passage we are reminded that God’s anointed was given God’s authority and power.  The prophecy of Jesus, the anointed Messiah and the future power He will have over the world and nations is realized in these verses.  No matter how the nations rage and rebel, God is in control, and His Son, the Anointed Messiah will be the One who will set the world straight and bring judgment on those who rebel and reject Him.  In verse 4 we are told that God laughs and scoffs at those who plot against Him as if He doesn’t know their plans and have the power to deal with their angry hearts.  The pronouncement of verse 7, “Thou art My SON, today I have begotten Thee”, reminds me of so many words spoken about the Lord.  From John 3:16, reminding us of God’s love for the world in the gift of His only begotten Son, to the mount of Transfiguration and the Lord’s baptism when God audibly spoke, This is My beloved Son, there is no doubt that this is a prophetic announcement of God giving His Son, Jesus the power and authority to rule, reign and bring judgment on all those that reject Him.

The real message in this passage is found in the proper response to this prophetic passage.   Palms 2:10-12, 10     Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. 11    Worship the LORD with reverence, and rejoice with trembling. 12       Do homage to the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish {in} the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!(NAS)  Oh that our nations would show the wisdom and discernment to take the warnings we are receiving right now an humbly bow before the Son and take refuge in Him.  We are to proud to literally take a knee before the Lord and call out to Him for forgiveness of our proud arrogant rebellion against Him as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  It reminds me of 2 Chronicles 7:14      and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Father, I recognize You as the God of all and Your Son as Your Anointed Messiah.  Thank You for sending Your Son so that I might not perish but have everlasting life.  I ask forgiveness for my rebellion over Your control of my life and I ask that our nation and it’s leaders might truly be brought to their knee in reverence and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and King.  May we truly humble ourselves and pray and seek Your face so that You can forgive our sin and heal our land.  In Jesus Name, Amen!  Pastor Rob
