Hobart Herd- Psalms 46 – 6-16-20
If you have ever needed words of comfort, strength, and trust in the presence of the Lord, you need to mark, read and memorize this Psalm. Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.(NAS) This verse states the doctrinal truth on which we stand and face whatever comes. The basic truth of God as our refuge, strength, presence, and help, is what I need most in a world like we face today. When I am in the midst of the greatest of troubles, it is important to return to the truth of Who God is, and what that means to me. The key to it all is the Lord’s promised presence. This allows us to live without the mind numbing, controlling fear that comes when everything around us is in turmoil.
The picture given us in verses 4-6 is that of the beautiful city of Jerusalem. This was a place of protection, and presence of God in His temple. For the Israelites, this became the premier example of their faith in God, and their trust His continual presence and protection. The promise of God’s covenant with His people is that the throne of David would be the place from which the Lord would reign and rule forever. To this day, the believing Jews are waiting and planning for the Lord’s return to rule and reign. This is why the city of Jerusalem is the center piece of all the troubles in Israel.
We have seen God at work to bring an end to wars and desolations. I have seen God bring peace, comfort, and strength in the midst of the greatest painful and troubling times. So how do I keep this heart of trust and faith in the Lord even when I don’t see His presence in my struggles and troubles. Psalms 46:10-11, 10 “Cease {striving} and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.(NAS) I need this reminder to stop struggling and go back to the faith and trust I have in God. The word “Selah” is like a pause or rest in a song. It should remind me whenever I read it to pause, rest, and trust in the Lord.
Father, forgive me for the panic and fear that I often exude when the world around me is in tragic turmoil. I know Who You are and Your promises of presence, strength, comfort, rest and peace. May I never doubt that You are their with me, my Rock, Strength, Refuge and Help. In Jesus Name, Amen! Pastor Rob
